Ganga is one of the oldest hostels in JNU. Situated on one side of Jhelum Lawns – a space of intense student activities ranging from Presidential Debate during the Student Union Election to celebration of the festival of colour to everyday cricket matches – and opposite to the Ganga Dhaba – an iconic space of gathering in JNU – this hostel also offers quiet walks to the woods. Ganga also boasts of the typical JNU architecture with open red-brick buildings and covered balconies for each room. Hostel premises are covered with lush green vegetation.
This hostel is now for girls. In its early years Ganga was the residence for boys and then became a 'mixed' hostel in JNU parlance with one of its two wings reserved for girls. Currently there are 205 rooms for students, out of which 61 are single-seaters. The total capacity of the hostel is 349 residents (including Second Room-mates and Third Room-mates). Ganga residents have traditionally been exceedingly cosmopolitan, virtually representing every part of diverse Indian social and cultural life.
The Office of the hostel is in the ground floor of its West Wing and remains open from 9 to 5, Monday to Friday. The Hostel Mess offers Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner to all the residents (including guests of residents). In the Common Room for residents there is a television set and a small collection of popular novels and journals. The Gym is located in the first storey of the Hostel Mess and frequented by enthusiastic residents. The Badminton Court, at the centre, is also popular space for residents, not only for the game but also for various cultural activities.
The Hostel elections are held every year at the beginning of the new academic year and presided over by the four Wardens of the hostel. The Hostel President, the Hostel Committee with six members, and the Mess Committee with six members are elected every year. Six Common Room Secretaries are interviewed by the Wardens' Committee from a number of applicants. The democratic system of hostel administration is rigorously followed as part of distinctive JNU culture .
