Discovery of biodiesel production from carbon dioxide concentrating oleaginous bacterium Serratia sp. ISTD04 from marble rock

The discovery is related to production of biodiesel from carbon dioxide concentrating endolithic bacterium, Serratia sp. ISTD04, isolated from marble rock, enriched by continuous enrichment in the presence of carbon dioxide in the chemostat, produces lipids inside the cells (oleaginous bacterium) and biodiesel. Carbon dioxide concentrating mechanisms of bacterium were evaluated by carboxylating enzymes and ribulose 1, 5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBisCO), formation of lipids inside cells by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and extraction of lipids, and transesterification of lipids by methanol and sodium hydroxide produced biodiesel, energy efficiency similar to jet fuel. Discovery of a novel mechanism and pathway in Entamoeba histolytica for cell killing and virulence

Entamoeba histolytica is the causative agent of amoebiasis, a major public health problem in developing countries. Invasion of intestinal and extra-intestinal tissues, such as liver are the major manifestation of this disease. Unfortunately, detailed mechanism of cell killing and invasion is still unclear. In this manuscript a new mechanism of cell killing and invasion has been proposed. This involves biting off and ingesting distinct pieces of living human cells, resulting in cell death. After cell killing, the amoebae detached and ceased ingestion. The internalization of bites of living human cells is reminiscent of trogocytosis (from Greek trogo–, nibble) observed between immune cells but amoebic trogocytosis like ingestion differs since it results in death. Ingestion of bites was required for human cell killing. The initiation of trogocytosis follows a mechanism that has been proposed for RBC phagocytosis by the JNU group involving a number of novel molecules, including a C2 domain containing protein kinase. Attacking drug - resistant strains of Candida albicans

Drug - resistant strains of the fungus, Candida albicans , have been on the rise for several decades, striking immunocompromised patients who have undergone organ transplants, chemotherapy or HIV treatments. The drug - resistant fungus exploits a number of membrane - embedded transporters to eject drugs from its cells.
